Hops are the flowers, or cones, of a plant called 'Humulus Lupulus'. Hops help to keep beer fresher and also aid the beer retain it's head of foam. Hops are a key component of a beers flavour and adds a 'Hoppy' aroma!
Amarillo hops impart a distinct flowery, spicy, tropical, citrus-like flavour and aroma. The citrus has qualities of orange and lemon, like Cascade but much stronger. Other aroma descriptors include grapefruit, melon, apricot and peach.
Azacca® was named after the Haitian god of agriculture. It is big in alpha acids and has a bright and refreshing aroma with juicy mango, tropical fruits, and citrus.
Cascade is bursting with zesty grapefruit flavour and aroma from the high levels of myrcene oil. It lends a pleasant and balanced bitter flavour, but is ideally used in late hop additions to maximize that bright flavour and aroma.
Centennial Hops are a great dual-purpose hop and can be used successfully for both bittering and aroma. Centennial hops are very similar to Cascade and are characterised by aromatic pine, citrus, and floral notes.
Chinook has predominately spicy and piney characteristics that transfer through into the flavour and aroma. Fruity, Piney, Spicy, and similar to Cascade.
Columbus features a punchy hoppiness and a deep, pensive aroma with understated citrus notes. Perfect as a dual use hop. Commonly used late in the boil and, when fresh, Columbus has a herbal flavour with a lemon citrus back note. Usable in a number of styles, notably American-style ales.
An exceptional new dual-purpose hop with both high alpha acid and intense flavours and aromas. When used in later additions, El Dorado brings bright tropical fruit flavours and aromas of pineapple, pear, watermelon, and stone fruit.
This hop brings pungent tropical fruit and pine character. It adds juicy tropical fruit and citrus (think apricot, orange, red grapefruit, papaya) with big notes of resiny pine and hints of black tea.
With subtle aromas of black pepper, nutmeg and a touch of citrus, Magnum is valued for having a very clean aroma, and is a fairly versatile hop used as a bittering base. It is generally accepted for use in ales and lagers.
Fuggles is revered as the classic English aroma hop and is often used in conjunction with Goldings. It can be used as a main copper hop and is also used for dry hopping.
East Kent Golding is often thought of as the ultimate English hop. Grown exclusively in Kent, England and descended from Canterbury Whitebine, it is a centuries old variety.
Saaz possesses a mild but distinctively spicy, pungent quality that is equally at home in other pale lager styles as well as Belgian and farmhouse ales.
A mixture of sweet, earthy, and herbal with vivid impressions of new-mown hay, sweet spices, and dried flowers. Its many offshoots and daughters show some of these same qualities, but none have the same range and balance as Mittelfrüh.
